常碰到许多学生苦恼地问老师，为什么有一些片语好像有兄弟姊妹似地，总是长很像，让人一不小心就眼花看错，像是这位同学：
老师，我有问题想请教，请问 on TV／on the TV 有什么差别，是不是其实可以通用啊？
谢谢这位同学的提问，其实呢英文有非常多的片语，而其中有一些常常让你觉得非常相像，而且时常让人搞混。例如这位同学说的，有时候在用 on TV，你会犹豫到底应不应该加上定冠词 the，今天我们就来看看那些好像却又不一样的片语，把它们一一攻破吧！

容易混淆的英文片语
on TV 电视上／on the TV 电视机上面
没有加定冠词 the 的时候，指的是“出现在电视萤幕上”的意思。例如：
Look! Jessica is on TV now.（你看！Jessica 上电视了。）
如果加上了 the，就变成是指定那一台电视机，这时候就表示位置“在那电视机顶端、上方”的意思喔！例如：
My cat loves to sleep on the TV for the whole afternoon.（我的猫喜欢一整个下午都睡在电视机上面。）
in front of 在～前面／at the front of 在～前面的位置
例如：
There is a cab in front of the bus.（有一辆计程车在公车前面。）
以及：
We were sitting at the front of the bus.（我们坐在公车前面的位置。）
有发现到吗？如果没有定冠词 the，表示所处的位置是在某个物体的前方，所以 in front of the bus 是指“在公车前面”；但有加上 the 的话变成是在那个物体“本身前方”的位置，因此 at the front of the bus 表示“在公车内前方的位置（也就是靠近司机的那一头）”。
look up 查询／look up to 尊重
使用 look up 的时候，常表示“在字典里面查询”，所以会这样搭配 look something up in the dictionary. 例如：
If you don’t understand a word, you can look it up in the dictionary.（如果你不知道一个字，你可以在字典里查询它。）
但是如果加上一个 to 的话，变成 look up to 就不一样啰，这是表示“尊重、敬佩某人”的意思。例如：
He saved a lot of people from the accident, so everyone looks up to him.（他在那场意外中救了许多人，所以所有人都敬重他。）
pull over 把车开到路边／pull out 驶出、驶离
如果介系词用的是 over，表示“慢慢把车靠边停”，是一种慢慢停下来的样子。例如：
The police asked the driver to pull over.（警方要求那名驾驶靠边停。）
介系词如果用 out 的话，表示车子“驶离”，也就是说车子是慢慢加速要起步离开了，是不是跟前面说的 pull over 有很大的不同呢？例如：
The bus had already pulled out when we got there.（在我们到那里之前，公车已经开走了。）
put on 穿上／put off 拖延
通常 on 跟 off 表示两个正好相反的概念，但搭配上了同一个动词 put 之后，两者可是完全没关系喔！put on 表示“穿上衣物”；put off 则是“拖延、延迟”。例如：
It’s cold out there. Put on this jacket.（外面很冷。穿上这件外套吧。）
以及：
It’s been raining these days. We have to put off the games.（最近都一直下雨。我们必须将比赛延期。）
take off 脱下／take on 承担
前面说到表示“穿上”的 put on 其实相反的动作“脱下”要说 take off，不过 take on 并不是“穿上”喔，而是“承担”的意思。例如：
He took off his coat and gave it to me.（他把他的外套脱下来给我。）
以及：
Jerry is in charge of the new project, which means he has a lot of new responsibilities to take on.（Jerry 负责这项新专案，那表示他有许多新责任要承担。）
